Politics of Stupidity

(Kodela Shiva Prasad)

Much like an audacious gril-wearing oversized-clothes donning in-your-face jewellery-wearing generic rap artist, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kodela Shiva Prasad spoke about and cars and women in the same breath, and recently came under fire for his inane comment likening the two, becoming yet another prominent name in the government who desperately looks for ways to blame women for the sexual harassment they face. According to him, just like vehicles parked in a garage are less likely to be in an accident than one on the road (especially ones that are speeding), women who stay at home can similarly avoid harassment as opposed to the rebellious ones who are daringly “studying, working, and also are doing business” and are thus shamelessly  “exposed to the society”. Wow.

Sadly, this is just one of the many instances when an Indian politician made a stupid comment trivialising serious issues.

Let me refresh your memory with the following list:

1. Kapil Sibal, ex HRD Minister

“There was zero loss to the exchequer from the 2G spectrum allocation.”

2. The Rahul Gandhi

“10 out of 7 youths in Punjab are hooked on to drugs.”

“We will stop 99 per cent of the attacks. But one per cent of attacks might get through and that is what I am saying.

“Poverty is a state of mind.”

“Politics is in your shirt, in your pant.”

3. Mulayam Singh Yadav

“Boys will be boys, they make mistakes.” (like rape)

“We should avoid the use of computers and English in India.”

4. Sushil Kumar Shinde

“Caste is important for selection of Home Minister.”

5. Babulal Gaur

“Sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong” (rape)

6. Rakhi Sawant

“I can guarantee that the roads of my constituency would be smoother than Katrina Kaif’s waist.”

7. Azam Khan

“It should be handed over to wakf board.” (on Taj Mahal)

8. Gulam Nabi Azad

“They won’t get a chance to produce children. When there is no electricity, there is nothing else to do, but produce babies”

9. Sheila Dikshit

“One should not be adventurous being a woman.”

“Rs 600 is enough to feed a family of 5.”

10. Salman Khurshid

“If we send industrialists to jail, we would be discouraging investment.”
