We all want to be successful in life. And that is exactly why most of our dreams remain unrealised. All we want is to be just ‘successful’.
This is also the prime difference between Shah Rukh Khan and us.
SRK is beyond being just successful. The man is a BRAND in himself.
The ultimate outsider in a fickle industry like Bollywood, SRK started off as a theatre artist, learning at Barry John’s, and then was launched in the TV Series Fauji, which opened the floodgates to the ‘floodlights’ of the glamorous film industry.
It is absurd that people believe that the superstar’s skills are restricted to just one genre – romance. A quick recap of his career is all it takes to dispel such nonsensical ideas – he slipped into the shoes of do-gooder characters in movies like Chamatkar and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, then surprised everyone with his performance of anti-hero roles in Baazigar and Darr. He proved his prowess in comedic roles in Baadshah and Duplicate, and showed “miyabhai ki daring” by dabbling in off-beat cinema like Asoka, Swades, and Chak De India! Most recently, his versatility was proved in Dear Zindagi, and even more in Fan.
And now, after two years of build up (its teaser came out in 2015, trailer in 2016, and eventually released in 2017), Shah Rukh Khan will once again prove why he is the Badshah of Bollywood.
Now that Raees is out, here are a few things that make it extra exciting.
SRK has a lot riding on this movie. Firstly, its release has buried all talks of an Eid release clash with Salman. He has ventured outside his assumed comfort zone with this one, and his pairing with Nawaz is surely going to create sparks, as no matter what, Nawaz did outshone SRK in parts of the trailer.
Secondly, this movie also means that SRK is ready to work with directors other than his friends. Rahul Dholakia knows a thing or two about Gujarat, with his Parzania being the case in point.
The movie has many the ingredients which you normally do not associate with a Shah Rukh movie.
The reason why I want Raees to become the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema is because it has always been Shah Rukh Khan who has had to continue to prove his worth, prove his mettle, prove his choices in movies. Because he comes from a non-filmi background, he has to continue justify a Dilwale, a Chennai Express, which is not the case with other competitors. They continue to appear in near identical roles and still get away with it.
And here comes the most prominent factor that raises SRK above his contemporaries. Being an intelligent, articulate, and a well read actor, which is a rarity in Indian Cinema, SRK is the bridge between so-called Superstar Actors like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and widely accepted Character Actors like Paresh Rawal, Naseerudin Shah and Manoj Bajpayee.
One does not need to sit through 2 hours in a theatre to understand the clout in his performance, which is evident even in 30 seconders. Check out the advertisements for Seagrams Royal Stag Mega Music and DHFL Home Loans in which he featured.
Shah Rukh Khan’s career is a lesson in itself, and his quotes a balm to those who are struggling in their fields.
Sample this: ‘’Everytime I fail, I try something new again. I’m such an impudent, incorrigible, uncontrollable, arrogant, self-centered human being. If you tell me don’t do it, I will do it again.’’
And I hope he never changes.
