The Indian Entertainment industry is finally showing signs of slowly but steadily wriggling out of the stranglehold of overdone reality (highly questionable) shows like Big Boss, Roadies, Indian Idol, the gag inducing nagin dramas, the OTT theatrics of clichéd K-series, and the traumatic saas-bahu serials which somehow normalise domestic abuse (the mental type, mostly).
Unfortunately, alternatives to such are hard to come across on television – but that has not deterred the determination of the viewership sick and tired of unimaginative baloney. They have instead turned to a different medium of entertainment to feed their appetite for distraction – the slew of very fresh and unpretentious webseries, and endless lists of videos of hilarious routines by stand-up comedians the internet has to offer. Be it the controversial AIB, or the very popular TVF Play, or the open mic gigs of new names in the comedy circuit, the internet-janata is spoilt for choice and with free/low tariff 4G service at their disposal, they are pumped to explore every relatable short, crisp and fun option!
No wonder the topic of discussion is no longer Tulsi, Simar, or even one of the crazies from the locked house under constant surveillance. Instead, the entertainers most talked about – be it for their looks or performance – are probably one of the following:
1. Angira Dhar (Bang Baaja Baraat)
She has been the face of Cadbury Dairy Milk, before she made the cut in Y-Films’ first web series, Bang Baaja Baraat.
2. Naveen Kasturia (TVF Pitchers)
As Naveen Bansal, Naveen Kasturia got girls lusting for him in the immensely popular show TVF Pitchers. The start-up co-founder in TVF Pitchers looking for seed fund for his venture was nothing but a masterpiece by TVF Play when the Indian Start-up Industry was on the rise and Naveen did complete justice to it and why not? Kasturia has had stints as an assistant director in Bollywood Movies like LSD and Shanghai.
3. Biswapati Sarkar (Barely Speaking With Arnub)
Arnab Goswami took Times Now to new heights and Arnub took TVF Play. Getting a chance to promote SRK and get promoted in return by SRK is no mean feat. Biswapati has been on other shows too like Pitchers and Permanent Roommates. He is anything but typical.
4. Rohan Joshi (AIB)
Rohan Joshi rose to fame when he starred in a video for AIB alongside Alia Bhatt in Genius of the Year. Rohan Joshi is known for his good looks and connection with the Bhatt Family. We say everything is fair in Love and Dhandha.
5. Kenny Sebastian (Stand-up Comedy)
Good looks definitely help but for Kenny its his sarcasm and humor that gets noticed first, and that’s why the extremely talented Kenny Sebastian has had nearly 500 shows in the last 5 years and is the king of comedy on youtube with 4 comedy specials to his name. He has 500k followers on his youtube channel and is well on his path to being the face of comedy in India.
